A Huge Honor

Chase has had quite the life these past 3 1/2 years. After cancer he was determined to get well, improve in baseball and help others. He has done all three! He has been cancer free for 3 years, he is an official bull pen catcher for the UNC Tarheels AND has been a part of the USA Collegiate Baseball team this past summer. Finally, he has now been chosen as a recipient for the Eve Carson Scholarship at Carolina and will be able to follow a passion of his which is helping other children with cancer.

There have been many interviews and articles about this wonderful scholarship, however, my favorite is from our local newspaper the Jamestown News. Click here to read and of course stay tuned to see where he plans to go this summer for an internship. There are so many possibilities and so many offers. What a special young man God has created in our son Chase!

We don't get snow like this very often and it has been fun. Chase is in Chapel Hill enjoying some snow there, not as much as us in Greensboro though. :-)

Soon we will be able to tell you what his summer plans are due to him receiving the Eve Carson Scholarship from UNC. A proud time for us as parents....Chase is a well deserving young man!

Childhood Cancer Awareness

Chase and I, as well as the rest of the family have been blessed with the many opportunities that have come his way. Many think that God is cruel when giving their child a cancer. I am one of the lucky ones that can say that through God, Chase as well as many others have been blessed. Chase has touched many lives in UNC Hospital when he was in as a patient and now even when he is out. Along with this, determintation has become a permanent part of his disposition. With these qualities he has shared them with many scholarship opportunities. He has recently been chosen as a recipient of the Eve Carson Scholarship that was started last year after her death. Also, recently we had the nice time of supporting the Ashton Miller fund. Ashton is a friend of Chase's who also has been fighting the battle of a childhood cancer. Her mother, Judy, and I teamed up to help raise money for Childhood Cancer. Unfortunately, there is not much awareness of all the cancers that hit our children and there is no one to advocate for them. So Chase, as well as Judy and I, are trying to do just that. Please read the article about Chase and realize that his passion is for childhood cancer, not just baseball. However, the two may come together someday, somehow.

Childhood Cancer fundraiser

A great friend of mine who's daughter is batteling cancer and is the same age as Chase is fighting for her life. What a great Fall Semester

With Chase's third year at UNC Chapel Hill underway, he has accomplished many things. The Business School at Carolina is where he spent most of his first semester and has done very well. He misses being up on campus where so many other students are that I found out he had been attending a lecture class just to be around other students. Can you believe that!? A kid going to an extra class just to see and be around others. He even went to the exam.....he wanted to be "that guy" to finish the exam in 15 min. and walk out. However, he got too involved in his essay that someone else beat him to the punch. What a great kid Chase is; sense of humor and a wonderful student. LOL

One of his best accomplishments is becoming president of the Carolina Dreams Club at UNC. This is something he is passionate about and seems as though he is destined to help out other children. Take a look at the link and see what he will be involved in during the next year or so. Of course, he will never forget Friends of Jaclyn and what that organization does for children specifically with brain tumors. I just love the Murphy's and how they have dedicated their lives to helping others.


His fall baseball season also turned out to be quite eventful. During the Fall World Series, as they call it, he was able to have an "at bat!" How exciting to see him at the plate swinging the bat. After accomplishing getting on base, by being hit by the pitch, LOL, he stole second base! Playing second base in the final inning was the ending hype of the game and there was no way you could slap the smile off his face that night.

With all that being said, we are so thankful that Chase continues to do well academically as well as in health. UNC Children's Hospital now has a new cancer wing and Chase is happy that he does not have to visit it but every six months now for scans. That is not to say that he does not go there to see other kids or to see Dr. Gold for a "hello" every once in a while, but his health has been very good and we know we are blessed. We do have one request. Please keep a dear friend of his, Ashton Miller, as well as her family in your prayers. Ashton is a friend he met through cancer and she still continues to battle the disease. Being 21 and having to make life changing decisions is truly what I am happy Chase does not have to make, but, Ashton does. Pray BIG for her, please.
Thanks for keeping up with Chase. Knowing that there are many out there praying for us and wanting the best in life for Chase makes his life wonderful.....as well as mine.

Clear Scans

I waited and waited and waited......finally Chase called and told me that the preliminary look at the scans was clean. YEAH! However, what he was most excited about was the new cancer wing at the UNC Chapel Hill Hospital. "Mom, it is awesome, you have got to see it" he says, before he even told me about the clean scans. Typical Chase, he is more excited about everyone or everything else than he is for himself. I love him..... He then goes on to tell me about how bad parking is and how he wants to do something to help those families that have to come and visit their children and pay for the parking time after time. They don't even sell the discounted passes anymore. He couldn't imagine me going and paying ever day and then his Grandmother and Aunt coming and paying also as many times as they came to visit. "Those bills add up" he says, I want to do something to try and help that situation. His mind is always rolling. He did hand off some Friends of Jaclyn pamphlets to the right people in the hospital. We really do hope to get more of those children involved in the program.

Chase will have an MRI tomorrow night, it is his first since March. I have been asking and asking him to get this done and he kept putting it off. They are not any fun, he will be quick to tell you that. But with his schedule of baseball, school, summer of baseball and then school starting again, he just couldn't tie down a time.

Please pray that the scans are clear as they have been in the past. This October 4th marks the third year since his diagnosis. We have been lucky that he has been strong and healthy since chemo and radiation was completed and I would like him to stay that way.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

September is officially deemed ‘Childhood Cancer Awareness Month’. Unfortunately for those of us living with childhood cancer it is a lifelong fight for awareness and not just 30 days. Breast Cancer Month is in October and you will start to notice the color pink everywhere and many companies will be showing their support with monetary donations to breast cancer funds when you purchase their products. The breast cancer folks run a fabulously successful campaign and I think everyone now associates the color pink with breast cancer. And please don't get me wrong, I think that is wonderful as my own mother has battled breast cancer.
However, gold is our children's color. The best character color in my opinion. It stands for quality and excellence and being second to none. EVERY CHILD with cancer exhibits these characteristics and children above all else should have our attention, our concerns and our promise. They are our future, our inspirations, our hopes and dreams, our daughters and sons, brothers and sisters, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. We owe them our best and we have to commit to finding a better quality of treatment, less invasive and toxic treatments and ultimately a way to stop these mutant cells from continuing to grow out of control and taking lives. I am going to take a guess that at least 85% of the people reading this had no idea that September was Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Well, now you know. Welcome to the party!
I do hope this grassroots movement continues to pick up momentum and September will be filled with gold ribbons and bald headed little kids asking for your help. The color gold will decorate Oreo bags, Barbie packages, diaper packaging and all sorts of other products. Millions of dollars will be raised and significant improvements will occur on all fronts. Awareness. Having knowledge of how widespread pediatric cancer is and how little funding it receives on the federal level and on the commercial level is crucial.
I know childhood cancer is not pretty. It’s heartbreaking and sad but we need to get over that and look the beast in the eye and make a commitment to help these kids. I am usually not a soapbox kind of guy but this is personal and on occasion I need to drag that box out and take to the airwaves. If you can, please make a little change for the next 30 days. I am sure you agree that we all use email every day. Please add this line after your signature "September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month." It’s the small steps that turn into large steps that turn into change. Just getting the word out and making people think, even just for a moment, about kids having cancer, is effective. If you have a blog, could you mention that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month? If you Tweet on Twitter, tell your followers that it’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Face bookers, tell your friends.
Spread the word.

Summer of Baseball

Let's just say that Chase had quite the summer with baseball. The College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska was his third in a row, the team's fourth, but still not the outcome that all would have wanted. The guys were so disappointed, but even more so in knowing that those games would be the last that they would play together, ever. Many were drafted or graduated and so the friendships will move on in different directions. A sad time for them in so many ways.

After a day's rest.....Chase joined up with Team USA in Cary and had a thrilling time. They played in Cary, NC until July 6th and then went on to Tokyo, Japan and finished up in Prince George, Canada where they won the World Challenge! He arrived back home in late July just in time to help his roommates move into the apartment and have a couple weeks before classes started again.

As for his health, Chase is doing very well. He had a scheduled MRI during the summer that he missed due to being out of the country. I keep hounding him to set up another one, but you know most 21 year olds, they have their own schedules and if they feel fine, he really doesn't think it is necessary. But, as his mother, I disagree!!! :-( We will see who wins this battle. hee hee

On another note, Jake, Chase's younger brother has now started college at UNCW and so the two of them are doing more chatting, aka. texting. I am happy that they are in touch with each other and both doing well. Jake will be a part of the baseball team down there as well. We are thrilled to be pulling for both the Heels and the Seahawks!

College World Series

Well, we all thought that this would be the year for the Tar Heels to win it all....but it wasn't. Much to our dismay, after a what seemed like a short week, we were headed back home from Omaha. Chase was out there for his third year straight and what was University of North Carolina's fourth. We joined him after the opening ceremonies and before the first game. The drive was long but well worth it as we loved every moment we had with him. The atmosphere out there is something to soak in and will not be the same after the new stadium is built. Many of the team's and Chase's thoughts and feelings can be found by reading his Post Card From Omaha articles that he wrote for the News and Record while they were there. Who knows, maybe journalism is in his future.
One thing I know is that I am a proud mom of a 21 year old, brain tumor survivor, who has really made his life into something special. Right now, he is in Cary, on the Team USA Collegiate baseball team and will be traveling abroad this summer to such places as Japan and Canada. A mother couldn't be any happier to have a healthy, happy, young man.

Clean Scans!

Whew! God is Good!

After a few days of being sick and a mother being worried, Chase was given the great news of "clean scans" once again. AMEN! For the two days prior to his scheduled MRI last Friday, he had been sick as in nauseated, vomiting and even missing classes. That is highly unlike him. He also knows that when he tells his mother he is not well, he better have a plan in tact for getting better. So, he did go and see the UNC Team doctor who advised him to stay at home, drink fluids and rest; it was probably a virus that was going around the team. That was Thursday. Friday morning he went in to the UNC Hospital for his scheduled MRI at 8:00 and at 2:00pm he was finally able to call me and tell me he was leaving and was feeling better. (After all, they had a game that night, a weekend series against Duke.) Seems like they are doing his spine in three sections now with contrast and then the brain. So it is taking much, much longer than it usually does. Then, the brain takes about 45 minutes itself.

When all that was done, he goes over to the clinic to meet with Dr. Gold, his oncologist, and discuss all of life's challenges. :-) Chase shared about what he has been doing with his speaking engagements and how he is supporting the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. Dr. Gold is quite supportive of all that Chase does and will do what he can for this foundation too.

The weekend series against Duke did not turn out as well as we would have liked. They won Friday night, but lost Saturday and Sunday. I did enjoy seeing Chase all weekend and spending time with my mom who came to the game on Saturday along with Buddy's Mom. Then on Sunday when Jacob and Kailey came along with Buddy's sister Rene.
After the game on Sunday I took us all out to eat to celebrate Jake's receiving the Teaching Fellow's Scholarship for UNC Wilmington. We are all proud that he wants to follow in our footsteps and be a teacher and especially a coach. There are many out there that know that Jake will make both a great teacher and a great coach.

All in all a great weekend, we just wish UNC could have pulled out a few more wins. Oh, and if you look in the picture to the right of me....you will see Coach Roy Williams. He was just another guy in the stands watching the game. Kinda cool, huh!

DC and Friends of Jaclyn

We could not have asked for a prettier weekend for March 7th and 8th! The temperatures were in the 70's as we walked around DC, saw the sights and enjoyed each other's company. We visited many places that meant different things to the three of us such as the Capitol, Lincoln Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and of course, even took a look through the fence at the White House. All of these things were just amazing to Chase, a place he has wanted to visit for many years. However, as you can see by the look on Chase's face, the White House just wasn't ready for him yet. Drats!

Now on to the real reason for the trip, the Friends of Jaclyn Gala Banquet.

The banquet was in honor the the kids and their families that the foundation supports. The kids either have or have had brain tumors. The foundation matches each child up with an athletic team from a University or High Schools in their area. In return, the child gets 20-30 new "brothers or sisters" to help them cope with the illness that they are going through. The team supports them by doing a variety of different things, sending cards, phone calls, allowing them to attend games, being an honoree for the team and much more. This goes on for a long, long time, not just a quick visit, but rather as long as the team and the child choose to stay together. Chase and his baseball team, the UNC Tarheels have adopted a child, James Neubauer, through FOJ and are very happy to have the opportunity to reach out to this family. Coach Fox sent Chase to this fabulous event to do his speaking engagement as a way to represent UNC even though they were in a big series against Clemson that weekend. Denis Murphy was proud to have Chase be a speaker because Chase is a brain tumor survivor, a Division I Collegiate Athlete and is now supporting such a wonderful cause. The Murphy Family will forever be in our hearts for what they are doing for other families with kids battling brain tumors.

What a terrific young lady!What a special evening, one that I will not forget for a long time. I am a proud mother of a son who continues to impress me with his strength and courage. His commitment to do whatever he can to help raise awareness of Pediatric Cancer is truly amazing. Even while taking a full load of classes at Carolina and playing baseball, he finds the time to do many things for others that reach beyond my own small mind's ability to grasp, "how does this kid do it all?" But I love him for it and I know that God has put him on this earth for a special reason; to help others to cope with the dreadful disease called, cancer.

Our thanks to all that attended that evening and supported the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. Denis Murphy, you are a wonderful man doing such phenomenal things for children all over the country. To the the rest of the Murphy family, Linda, Taryn and Jaclyn, I was delighted to meet you that evening and hope that our friendship will continue. To Sarah Walsh, Denis' right hand "woman", the event was beautiful and I know you are already planning for the next one. May God bless all of you.

Let the Season Begin

ACC Baseball was off to a very cold start last weekend, February 20th; however it was a winning weekend all the way around. Chase is now an official bullpen catcher and to put it in his words "I couldn't be happier!" He now dresses out with the team for every game, is in the dug out amongst all the excitement until he gets the call to go to the bull pen. That is when he goes and warms up any pitcher that may be going into the game. He can tell you what everyone of them throws, what speed, what their best pitch, their worst pitch and their favorite pitch might be. Some of these guys will be going to the majors, and he will be able to say, "I warmed him up before such and such game." What a fabulous life to be living after cancer.

The Tar Heels have played eight games and they are 7-1 right now! They are loaded with pitching and even on the off days Chase can be seen out their new stadium catching with someone because they will be throwing that week and they want to keep themselves in shape. Who do they call? Number 41, Chase Jones.....he will never say no. He loves his role on the team and continues do well academically too. He was accepted into the Business school at Carolina a couple weeks ago, and that was BIG TIME. Coach Fox even recognized him in front of the entire team before practice. That is a humbling experience for any young man, especially Chase. He has officially worked his way up to being recognized as a part of the team. I couldn't be prouder!

After one year in the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, they are now back home in the new Boshamer Stadium. You may take a tour with Coach Mike Fox or you may look at a few of the players reactions during the opening weekend at The Bosh. After Christmas Posting....

A very busy Christmas this year. Driving to Memaws, then to Grandmas and now the guys are back in Greensboro. Chase is planning his big trip to the Bowl game that Carolina will be playing in Charlotte. Can you say excited? Then, he gets to come back to Raleigh, Grandma's, and I will take him to Fayetteville to then fly to New Orleans so he can work baseball camp at Tulane University. What a busy time man he is! Buddy and Jake get to do all the driving by themselves. This is because Chase is flying down there and even back due to a certain someone special coming to visit Chase in New Orleans. I sure hope they have fun. :-)

I am sorry I don't have any pictures to share right now. Someone, me, forgot her camera on this trip. Buddy was the "official" photographer. Believe me, we have plenty of pictures, I just don't have them available on my computer to share.

In this time of good news for Chase and his health, there are others that I do continue to pray for and I would like so much for your continued prayers. Coleman Larson and his family along with two other brothers, Bronson Lee and Braedon, both of which are battling brain tumors. Just imagine, if you can, what life would be like in their shoes.

Have a Merry Christmas

Chase is home now and we have enjoyed many conversations together. It is good to have the family around and just "being together". The boys do seem to do their own thing at times, but, they are both adults, so, we have adjusted. Buddy and I enjoyed our 23rd anniversary on the 21st! Chase is quite impressed realizing at his young age of 20, how hard marriages can be. I am proud of him in so many ways.
Our Christmas will be spent between our two mothers, Grandma and MeMaw, as both our fathers have passed away and we feel the need to spend time with our Mom's. The boys usually split up between Buddy and me. One will go with me to my mom's and one will stay with Buddy at MeMaws. Not sure who it will be this year. Whoever comes to Grandma's gets a wonderfully hung stocking from Santa though, and that is always exciting. :-)


After Christmas this year, all my men will be going down to New Orleans to work baseball camp at Tulane. I will stay behind with JD, my wonderful companion, because my back is not allowing me to handle the long drive. Maybe next year. I think JD and I will enjoy watching movies and eating ice cream together. Right JD? ;)

I am sure I will have some wonderful pictures to share after Christmas. Right now we are thankful for yet another clear MRI last month for Chase. We hope that the MRI's will go from every 3 months to every 6 months pretty soon. However, we know that we are blessed this Christmas with having him healthy and happy. Baseball is so much fun for him and this summer he will even get to travel with Team USA across the country and even into Japan and Canada. What an exciting time of life for him!

I continue to pray for so many more that are battling this awful disease called cancer. Please say a special prayer for Chase's friend Ashton. She had a recurrence and had some major surgery just last week. Now she is having to handle some decisions about her upcoming care. She is also 20 and attends UNC Chapel Hill. I can't imagine going through all of what she is going through, AGAIN! Then there is a special child who I have not ever met, Coleman Larson. He is a 5 year old boy who has a twin brother. Coleman has a brain tumor and his brother does not and their story is remarkable. They have a Carepage if you would like to follow his journey. Go to Coleman Scott Larson at this carepage. Friends of Jaclyn

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting Denis Murphy. He is the man behind the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. What a pleasure it was. It was so nice putting a face to a man that I have spoken with so many times. What a busy man he is too! While coming through Greensboro on his way to spend the weekend in the Durham/Chapel Hill area to make a couple adoptions for kids with Duke University, was able to meet with Chase for the first time. I believe they have really connected in a way that many others could or would not understand. See, Denis is a man who's daughter has a brain tumor and is the reason for him starting a program in which he organizes university athletic teams to "adopt" kids with brain tumors in order to uplift their spirits on a daily basis. If not daily, then at least when they can. It is like having 30-40 additional brothers or sisters. When Chase was sick and in the hospital, he had that with the Carolina baseball team. They rallied around him and still to this day are continuing to do so. This is one reason, I believe, Chase has done so well and is a cancer survivor today. So, Denis knows that with Chase being the leader of the outreach program for the UNC Baseball team in which they have adopted a child, he loves this connection; Chase, a brain tumor survivor, division I athlete, leading up the program that he has created. Chase is not your usual young man, God has great plans for him.

One last bit of news that is exciting for the Jones family~we have a new Seahawk in the family~Jake was accepted to UNC Wilmington! We are so proud of him.

G105 Radiothon

What a great day! Black Friday started out for most of us at 3:30 am with a bit of shopping. Chase decided that sleeping is was a better idea, and so that is what he did. As for the rest of us, we were up and shopping and helping the economy. First it was Kohl's at 4:00 am; WHEW! Who says people are not shopping! Next is was on to Target. Again, another long line wrapped around the building. But, in order to get that surprise for Chase, "you gotta do what you gotta do" as they say. People for the most part were very nice. However, I would never have expected to find what I was looking for in Men's clothing.....(don't ask, Chase isn't supposed to know)

After a short nap it was off to Crabtree Valley Mall to sign in and volunteer for the G105 Radiothon benefiting the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Parking was a bear! Again..... who says people aren't shopping!

When we arrived we quickly met Michael Beaver whom I had emailed and chatted with on several occasions lately. His family has also been affected by brain tumors. He was in the radio business until five years ago when he left that job to come and work for the foundation. What a great one too. My sister, Mary Beth and I were put to work on the phones while Mom was posted as a greeter. She loves to smile and say hello and strike up conversations. That is her gift, one of her many talents one might say. :-)

So, after an hour or two of volunteering, Chase and I had our 4 minute interview. It was very nice to be able to put in a plug about the UNC Hospital and how good our doctor's were. The PBTF has a lot of research going on at Duke Hospital and we are thankful for that, but we know that UNC was good to us too. We also met Mike Traynor who is the founder of the PBTF. What a neat man! I am so thankful for him and for his entire family for what they are doing for pediatric brain tumor research. Thank you Mike for including us in that wonderful event.

Thanks Michael, for taking my emails and seeing that Chase and I have a passion for trying to help others with pediatric cancer. Thank you G105 and Bob and the Showgram for supporting the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. We need more people like you! Chase and I will continue to do what we can to help also and were blessed to be a part of such a great program yesterday.

Did someone say MALL?

Yup, that's right, Chase and I, along with Aunt Beth and Grandma will be going to Crabtree Valley Mall on Black Friday. My mother and sister both swore off of shopping on that day. However, I have managed to get them there for a very good cause. Bob's Buddies, along with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation have invited both Chase and me to be part of their big day. We have a one hour time slot from 2:00-3:00 to be interviewed on G105 radio. Prior to that we will all be volunteering by either manning the phone or being greeters. You know how Grandma is....she loves to greet. Maybe if you come on out to the mall you can stop by and say hello! Or, you can listen on the radio.....

What an exciting morning when they announced it over the radio and then Clay JD Walker showed up on our classroom to do some live "spots" for the radio station. Needless to say, with so much money raised, the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation was extremely happy with us and has also been in contact with both Chase and me. Our next adventure will be being part of a radiothon in Raleigh to raise more money for the same great cause.

Chase is beginning to get a lot of exposure due to all of this. Take a look at this following interview that was put together by our local Fox 8 station here in Greensboro. It is very inspirational, so you can see why both foundations are seeking him to speak for them. Both Friends of Jaclyn and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation have found a great young man.
