Childhood Cancer Awareness

Chase and I, as well as the rest of the family have been blessed with the many opportunities that have come his way. Many think that God is cruel when giving their child a cancer. I am one of the lucky ones that can say that through God, Chase as well as many others have been blessed. Chase has touched many lives in UNC Hospital when he was in as a patient and now even when he is out. Along with this, determintation has become a permanent part of his disposition. With these qualities he has shared them with many scholarship opportunities. He has recently been chosen as a recipient of the Eve Carson Scholarship that was started last year after her death. You can read more about it here.

Also, recently we had the nice time of supporting the Ashton Miller fund. Ashton is a friend of Chase's who also has been fighting the battle of a childhood cancer. Her mother, Judy, and I teamed up to help raise money for Childhood Cancer. Unfortunately, there is not much awareness of all the cancers that hit our children and there is no one to advocate for them. So Chase, as well as Judy and I, are trying to do just that. Please read the article about Chase and realize that his passion is for childhood cancer, not just baseball. However, the two may come together someday, somehow.

God is Great,

Judith~mother of Chase

My Name is Darma Kates.... my son was diagnosed with a Germinoma in April of 2009; his name is Joshua (Josh) Kates. We were at Duke from April until July... my mom saw the amazing article written about your son. Josh turned 17 in November 2009 and he loves Carolina and baseball!! All that time at Duke and we still can't get him to switch teams! The article about Chase really touched my heart. Josh really hasn't had anyone that has gone through was he has to talk to and confide in. Josh is on the quite side... but he is truly amazing. We are so blessed to have him with us today. We knew Josh was sick... but it took him getting in a car accident to finally find out what was wrong. God was telling us it is time to know.

I have always known that God had a special plan for me and I know it has something to do with Josh's diagnosis. Helping other families that are going through the same thing we have...be more involved in Childhood Cancer Awareness. No child should ever have to go through this terrible disease. In the fall of 2008, I put together my first Relay for Life Team... some thing I have always wanted to do. People would ask how cancer had touched my life and I was very blessed to say... I wanted to make a difference BEFORE cancer touched my life. Our county Relay was April 24th, 2009 and Josh's accident was April 21st. It still gives me chills thinking about it.

I could go on and on... We blog on Caringbridge (Joshkates) I hope you will take the time and read about Josh’s journey. I would love to talk to you and possibly have Chase communicate with Josh. I know he is a very busy young man. God has blessed all of us. Our boys are our inspiration and our miracles.
